Black Repertory Group Theater

The Black Repertory Group Theater is one of the oldest Black-owned and Black-operated theaters on the West Coast — a cultural landmark built on courage, community, and the unstoppable imagination of Black artists. Founded in 1964, BRG has been a home for generations of performers, playwrights, dancers, musicians, and storytellers who needed a place where their voices could rise without apology.

This theater is more than a building. It is a sanctuary, a training ground, and a living archive of Bay Area Black theater history. Its stage has carried protest, poetry, gospel, jazz, comedy, tragedy, sensuality, and survival. It has held the weight of our stories and the brilliance of our dreams.

And for The Writer, Coffy Town’s creator, this theater holds a special place in her heart and her history.

Except Mrs. Nora Vaughn Scott

When she was just twenty-five, carrying a controversial idea called The Punany Project — a raw, sensual, political answer to AIDS awareness and the demonization of Black women in early 1990s hip-hop — no one would touch it. No one would risk it. No one would give her a stage.

Mrs. Scott, the matriarch of Black Rep, saw past the controversy and straight into the purpose. She opened the door, offered the stage, and gave The Writer her first theatrical home. She was tough, loving, visionary, and unafraid — the real-life Gladys Surrender, the archetype of the woman who sees your fire before you know how to hold it.

Her legacy lives in every brick of this building.

A full-circle homecoming

The Writer is proud to return home with a Coffy Town production that will warm your heart, bringing a new canon of Black Noir storytelling, pantomime, dance, mystery, and multimedia edutainment back to the theater that embraced her. This is a full-circle moment — a homecoming, a tribute, and a continuation of Mrs. Scott’s legacy.

Inside Coffy Town, the Black Repertory Group Theater stands as a Legacy Venue in the Creative Commons District: a place where players unlock lore, attend live shows, join workshops, and step into the world of Coffy Town through performance, movement, and community.

This storefront honors the past, celebrates the present, and opens the door to the next generation of Black imagination.
