Truth is a Trap House

A book, a listening party, and a set of recordings by Jessica Holter. Truth as a house you get lured into, where the product is fear and everybody leaves with something they did not come for.

Truth is a trap house,
built beneath mythical trees
guarded by weasels.
The teal Truth is a Trap House door in the HIP IP Tower basement, lit in neon and signed 'Listening Party hosted by Emcee Skawla,' with headphones hanging on the brick wall beside it.

The Listening Party

Hosted by Emcee Skawla — every cut in one set: her songs, Brown Viking's title poem, and the Pete Prayer duets and solo cuts from his folder. The horrorcore remix is the explicit cut, adult language throughout. Every track is a free download for all Citizens — hit the Download button beside any song.

  • Mostly, I stay busy — makin' songs, writin' lyrics, and stayin' out of other people's personal Be Eye Zee.
  • I got light‑weight bullied about the genius of my father. Kids threw water on me and called my genius father “Foolish Scholar.”
  • Yeah, kids can be mean. They did not faze me. Painful moments can serve you better than some of the best. Yes, yes. That one gave me my stage name. Emcee Skawla.
  • I'd ignore once and think twice before answering to my given name… Esther Seafare.
  • My mother, rest her soul, she used to testify into her phone, “Esther? She real smart, you know? Esther done been here before!” she'd say.
  • Look — when you get bullied and rise up anyway? The props you give yourself can be a lot. I earned mine.
  • I've always been mature.
  • I knew the kids at Coffy Town School were just following their narratives — moving like NPCs, Non‑Playing Characters, not truly thinking, just echoing what they heard at home…
  • They said my father was just a man with the nerve to think he could out‑hocus‑pocus Mother Nature.
  • No time for haters.
  • Forced to focus on my future.
  • I can hardly wait for tomorrow.
  • I mean, hey… I get so much better every day.

The Book

The title poem's world: a former crack house in Atlanta that a poet converted into a venue for her Open Truth Night — walls freshly papered with the faces of Sanchez, Brooks, Angelou, Lorde, Giovanni and Hughes, the scent of old misery still stuck like gum on the carpet.

Poetry and narrative collection — poems, haiku, one-act poems, letters, and essays
