About Jessica Holter
Jessica Holter is a writer, worldbuilder, and cultural architect whose work bridges literature, theater, education, and community healing. Best known as the creator of The Punany Poets, she has spent three decades transforming lived experience into immersive art that blends emotional intelligence, social commentary, and narrative innovation.
Through Holter Intellectual Property, Inc., she develops books, curricula, performances, and creative ecosystems that amplify marginalized voices and reimagine storytelling as a tool for truth, identity, and liberation. Her projects — including Coffy Town, Voices of Foster Care, and the HIP Curriculum — reflect her commitment to building worlds where art, advocacy, and community empowerment intersect.
As a former foster child, Holter’s work is deeply rooted in narrative justice and the belief that stories can heal, protect, and transform. Her writing spans poetry, memoir, children’s literature, and theatrical production, all unified by a singular mission: to help people see themselves, speak their truth, and reclaim the power of their own story.

Jessica Holter, Live in the Velvet Room
This video captures writer and poet Jessica Holter sharing selections from her Vault of Rhymes at The Velvet Note in Alpharetta, Georgia. Holter and her collective, The Punany Poets, rose to national visibility in 2000 through their appearance on HBO’s Real Sex. But the movement began years earlier: in 1995, Holter founded The Punany Project to raise AIDS awareness through publishing and performance, later releasing her first book, Punany: The Hip Hop Psalms, in 1998.

Jessica Holter’s poem “Lady’s Room” comes to life through rare historical footage of The Punany Poets performing The Head Doctor Show in New York City. Filmmaker Mya Baker, founder of Shoot Films. Not People., captured the production at the Producer’s Club, preserving an intimate chapter in the evolution of Holter’s romantic edutainment movement.
The footage features the late, great comedian Eebony Browne, along with a full cast of Punany Players, in both backstage and onstage moments. Their performances reveal the raw theatrical energy, sensual storytelling, and community‑centered artistry.

The Second Sin blends sensuality, satire, and social critique, turning erotic expression into a tool for dialogue and cultural reckoning.
Graduate scholar Raquel Monroe analyzed The Second Sin as a central case study in her UCLA dissertation, UEAT: Urban Erotic Activist Theater, situating Holter’s work within traditions of performance that challenge stigma and expand conversations on Black embodiment and liberation.

The HIP Soul Fest is a community initiative for emerging artists, created in 2023 by writer and cultural architect Jessica Holter and musician D’Wayne Wiggins of Tony! Toni! Toné!
Designed as a platform for creative mentorship and artistic empowerment, HIP Soul Fest brings together young performers, poets, and musicians to collaborate, learn, and showcase their talents. The festival blends live music, spoken word, cabaret, and community dialogue, offering participants both stage experience and professional development.
